ASTM publishes its “Manifesto” for inclusive and quality welcoming at motorway service areas

Today December 3, on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, ASTM is releasing its “Manifesto” for a caring, comfortable and inclusive welcome for an increasingly wide range of people at motorway service areas. These areas serve millions of travelers each year and thus contribute to defining the overall service offered to customers, including those with temporary or permanent frailties, complementing the fundamental and complex management of traffic, safety, and motorway operations in general.

The “Manifesto” summarizes the fruitful collaboration between the ASTM Group and CPDConsulta per le Persone in Difficoltà ODV ETS, that has led to share will and specific technical and scientific knowledge to improve the accessibility and usability of spaces, for the mutual benefit of people and communities.

As part of the broader “Agenda della Disabilità” project, ASTM and CPD launched this project at the beginning of the year to assess the structural and perceptive accessibility of service areas and consequently develop a set of recommendations, a sort of toolkit to guide and support those who design, manage and operate within them. These indications will be able to inspire improvement proposals both regarding the services currently provided at the service areas and those to be assigned through future tender procedures.

The guidelines resulting from this shared journey, in addition to embracing the criteria of universal design that aims to best meet the needs of everyone, regardless of physical impairment, age or other conditions, emphasize the importance of training operators to acquire useful knowledge to operate daily and in emergency situations. This is real inclusion; we all can be part of it.
