10 March 2025 ASTM: More value to the road asset, modernization works on the Italian network continue
The evolution of mobility and the increase in road traffic require a constant process of modernization of transport infrastructure. To tackle this challenge, ASTM adopts an industrial approach in managing its assets, which include over 5,900 km of infrastructure, based on innovation, technical expertise and targeted investments, with the goal of making motorways safer, more efficient and sustainable.
Among the ongoing projects on the Italian network, the demolition and reconstruction of the San Bernardo viaduct, located along the A6 Torino-Savona, stands out. The structure, originally consisting of three spans with a total length of 63 meters, will be rebuilt with a single span, thus improving its structural performance. One of the most delicate stages of the intervention was the launch of the new beam, which is 5 meters high and weighs 190 tons. It was moved using specialized equipment, including two 500-ton cranes, 20 truck trailers, and supported by a team of 60 workers and technicians.
The Italian motorway network, geographically complex, is characterized by numerous engineering works, including bridges and tunnels. A significant example is the A6 Torino-Savona section, managed by Autostrada dei Fiori, which includes 364 bridges, many of which were built over 70 years ago, following design standards different from the current ones. Since 2013, when the Group took over the management of this section through Autostrada dei Fiori, important modernization interventions have been carried out and will continue over time to ensure safer and more efficient highways.
