27 February 2025 ASTM and CPD present guidelines for inclusive hospitality at highway service areas
ASTM, in collaboration with CPD – Consulta per le Persone in Difficoltà, has introduced a set of recommendations to ensure inclusive and high-quality reception at the service areas within its motorway network. The goal is to promote services that meet the needs of an increasingly wide range of people, including those with various disabilities.
As part of the Disability Agenda, ASTM has launched an awareness initiative aimed at improving accessibility and the quality of hospitality at the service areas within its Italian highway network, which has reached over 1,100 km and includes 56 service areas.
The guidelines can serve as inspiration for improvements both in existing service areas and in those to be awarded through future tender procedures, providing solutions for those seeking to ensure that people with disabilities can independently access available spaces and services.
The innovative aspect of this initiative lies in a paradigm shift—going beyond current regulations to establish true inclusivity for all users. For example, by installing checkout counters at an appropriate height to facilitate payment for everyone, designing refilling areas that allow unobstructed access to fuel, or implementing easy-to-understand communication to provide clear information for individuals with cognitive difficulties.
