The importance of transferring passion for the world of infrastructure to new generations: the ASTM testimony at PoliMI

As part of activities aimed at strengthening its bond with the academic world, bringing theory closer to practice in the workplace, ASTM Group has established strategic partnerships with several universities. Among them, ASTM has joined the Investor Program of the Politecnico di Milano, a prestigious Italian university in the field of scientific and technological education, which provides for several meetings throughout the year.

On 7 October, a Career Talk entitled “Managing Structures and Infrastructure: Innovative Projects and Where to Find Them” was held, which was attended by engineering students from different courses to hear from technical representative of leading Italian companies about initiatives that stand out for their innovative scope. The ASTM Group presented, through its EPC contractor Itinera, the project currently in progress for the Storstrom Bridge in Denmark, a double-track road and rail bridge approximately 4 km long.

Aurelia Penza, Technical Manager of the work and former student at PoliMI, reported to the girls and boys in the classroom about her own experience, highlighting both the challenging technical aspects of this infrastructure and the more human oness of working away from one’s comfort zone: “The Strostrom Bridge is a unique project, where every day you can learn something. My choice to move from Milan to Vordingborg, a small town with about 10,000 citizens where the weather conditions are prohibitive because of the perennial wind, was to be part of this demanding and challenging construction site. I am proud and grateful to have been chosen as the technical manager at less than 40 years of age of such a big project.”

Career Talks are important opportunities for ASTM to introduce people to the fascinating world of infrastructure and to open a establish a direct dialogue with the next generation of professionals in the sector.
