18 November 2024 125 times FIAT: Turin exhibition collects historical legacy of Turin-Milan motorway managed by ASTM
On the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the founding of FIAT, MAUTO – National Automobile Museum is staging the exhibition “125 TIMES FIAT. Modernity through the FIAT Imaginary,” tracing the history of the car factory with a reinterpretation that highlights its social impact and artistic production. The exhibition project can be visited from November 15, 2024, to May 4, 2025 in the ground floor spaces of the iconic museum in Turin.
Founded in 1899, the Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino was able to seize the opportunities of the industrial revolution to establish itself as a leading private interpreter of the country’s modernization in the last century. Drawing on the vast visual heritage produced or inspired by FIAT, the exhibition recounts the bond that united the car company with Italy’s cultural, industrial and economic development. On display are works of art, sketches, advertising posters, archival documents, visual and audiovisual materials, accompanied by cars tracing a century of history and the evolution of the famous brand.
Along the A4 Turin-Milan motorway, portrayed in the exhibition through a pic dated back to the early 1930s and belonging to the ASTM Group‘s historical archives, the histories of FIAT and ASTM, both deeply linked to the city of Turin and the infrastructure itself, intersect. ASTM, originally named “Autostrada Torino Milano,” was in fact established in 1928 with the aim of building a fast road link between the two cities. Construction began in 1929 thanks to Senator Agnelli, who sensed the need for a special transport route for motor vehicles: work took less than 3 years, and the connection was inaugurated in October 1932.
More than 90 years later, the 125 kilometers of asphalt separating two of the country’s most important industrial hubs have undergone major changes, modernization works and technological innovation that have gone along with the development of the cities and territories crossed. Yesterday as today, the Turin-Milan motorway represents a strategic infrastructure for Italy and we at ASTM are its proud keepers.
